چکیده

INTRODUCTION Medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) comprise a glycerol molecule attached to 3 fatty acid chains ranging between 6 to 12 carbons in length. Unlike most other lipid molecules that require a complex process of digestion, MCTs are more easily absorbed into the bloodstream from the gastrointestinal tract. These features of MCTs confer unique benefits in the management of gastrointestinal disorders.1 As such, MCTs have historically been used to treat steatorrhea resulting from malabsorptive disorders, such as pancreatic insufficiency, prior gastrectomy and small bowel resection. MCTs have also been investigated for their potential to reduce obesity, cardiovascular disease, and neurological disorders. The purpose of this review is to describe the composition, functional characteristics and sources of MCTs, as well as to review the evidence investigating the use of MCTs in the management of gastrointestinal disorders.

Effect of Medium-Chain Triglycerides on Gene Expression of ATP-Citrate Lyase and H3K27ac in Developing Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease in an Animal Model

Background and purpose: Increase in ATP-dependent Citrate Lyase (ACLY) is observed in individuals with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). One of the compounds considered for the prevention of fatty liver is Medium chain triglycerides (MCT). In this study, the preventive effect of MCT on ACLY enzyme gene expression and the level of histone 3 lysine 27 acetylation (H3K27ac) were investigat...

Medium-chain triglycerides/long-chain triglycerides versus long-chain triglycerides in treatment of cancer patients with major body mass loss. Survival in patients with refractory cachexia

INTRODUCTION Currently there are no established guidelines regarding the use of long-chain triglycerides (LCT) vs. medium-chain triglycerides medium-chain triglycerides (MCT)/long-chain triglycerides (LCT) in total parenteral nutrition (TPN). Severe malnutrition of patients with refractory cachexia (RC) often causes their disqualification from invasive methods of treatment thus decreasing their...

Randomized clinical trial of new intravenous lipid (SMOFlipid 20%) versus medium-chain triglycerides/long-chain triglycerides in adult patients undergoing gastrointestinal surgery.

BACKGROUND SMOFlipid 20% is intravenous lipid emulsion (ILE) containing long-chain triglycerides (LCT), medium-chain triglycerides (MCT), olive oil, and fish oil as a mixed emulsion containing α-tocopherol. The aim was to assess the efficacy of this new ILE in gastrointestinal surgery compared with MCT/LCT. METHODS In this prospective study, 40 patients were randomized to SMOFlipid 20% or MCT...

Dietary or enteral medium-chain triglyceride usage in a Chinese general hospital.

OBJECTIVES Medium chain triglycerides (MCTs) are of nutritional interest for their unique properties on ingestion, absorption and metabolism. However, dietary and enteral MCTs usage in hospitalized patients in China requires evaluation. METHODS A retrospective analysis was conducted on 46 hospitalized patients who were administered MCTs therapy between January, 2012 and December, 2013 in Peki...

Protein-losing enteropathy in children

Protein-losing enteropathy (PLE) is a rare complication of a variety of intestinal disorders characterized by an excessive loss of proteins into the gastrointestinal tract due to impaired integrity of the mucosa. The clinical presentation of patients with PLE is highly variable, depending upon the underlying cause, but mainly consists of edema due to hypoproteinemia. While considering PLE, othe...
